Summer Soltice

If you read this blog enough, you know I love Ani Difranco. I almost always have the lyrics and song posted on the side blog and my Sansa will always have at least three of her albums on it. It's been this way for almost 10 years. (damn you Matt!)

Guess you can say I'm just like every other chick out there. And so what if I am? We have damn good taste in music. So it should come as no surprise that I caught her Summer Solstice show at Library Square last Friday and I hate to admit it, I'm a bit disappointed.

The lines were chaotically long and she was late. So late that her set was short.

But I'm not disappointed for those reasons. As nice as it was to see her live, nothing comes close to having her words and her pickin' in my head, all to myself, while I am boarding or cycling or doing whatever activitating I'm doing...it's her brand of motivation that I'm after. It's her way of making the female feel empowered by the use of her tongue. It's the way she can phrase something in a song that I can only hear when it's just me and her in the intimate space between my ears.

I was disappointed but only because I had to share her with the rest of the inter- mountain west.

So back to life and back to the headphones...where its just me and Ms. Difranco

  1. I know how you feel. I've only seen one live show (on any big scale) in the last three years for just about the same reason. I'm sure that much music (and other art for that matter) gives a variety of meaning and experience depending on the environment in which it is experienced.

Part of me wonders if I am just growing up and getting lame.

  2. oh les,

why does growing up(entering your 30's) equal lame? maybe it's just a generational thing.

i think most 20 somethings are lame (read: a pain in the ass) i have a low tolerance for complaining. what do 20 somethings have to complain about anyways?

ok, back to concerts. i saw the cure a month ago and it was good. actually, i thought they sounded better live. and then there's metallica and tool who always put on a great show that walk away star struck

but you know, my favorite show is always michael franti and spearhead. even though i mostly listen to him in my ears, i love to see him live. the vibe and energy of his live shows...nothing can beat it.

  3. Just dropping in as your twenty something friend to pout :-). I've only been to a couple of concerts, and they're always too loud for me. I have sensitive ears.

  4. lessie,

i wasn't speaking about anyone in particular. you know that?

i wouldn't have the bust (is that what you guys settled on?) to do that. i was speaking of the mass of 20somethings that i encounter in day to day life.

    blech.

  5. i felt the same way...it was good but frustrating that i couldn't hit the > button and listen to her earlier albums instead.

i think she waited to play until the sun went down. her stage was facing the setting sun and it probably would have been brutal. she didn't come on more than ten minutes after the sun dropped below the line of the library roof.

bummed that i didn't see you there...i saved you a good spot but there were a hella lotta people there.

have to agree with you about tool. hands-down best stage show EVER.
